Brilliant, I have all of John's music, started in '73 and he has stayed with me, At least every day I play at least one CD, who needs other music. This CD is brilliant, CD2 gives you an insight to him, it brings a beaming smile to my face everytime I play it. I love to set the tracks up and play every version of a track and am always amazed at how different and fresh they all. Like so many I was, and remain, heartbroken at John's death. Bless you for the please you have given for the past 37 years and will continue 'til I die or go deaf.
Hi, it's hard to understand for me. The discussion group is somethin like a very little island lost elsewhere. Discussion is not the matter here. Looks like more like a place for lost, lonesome letters.
Live at leeds was a very important point in Martyn's way. But whats happen with the last tapes he has workin on. I love Pharoah Sanders very much, but thats no help for me. Also the "Tribute" CD looks interesting. Maybe the CD will look in same way in ten years, but all in all it looks to me that nothing will be really happen. It's a shame. Yes I listen to most of the Martyn records very often. Some from that stuff is really strange. Some really wonderful. When Martyn was lost on Hawaii where he learn to love the slack key tuning, nobody knows in fact somethi9ng about it. He's last remarkable album, ONE WORLD is still not available in a fine quality. But no one has something to say about it. Very bad.
Hummmm...this seems like an interesting little corner of Lonesome Letter Island. Not sure what Walter is trying to imply as regards One World...is he saying that he knows something that we all don't? Is there a holy grail version out there somewhere? I , like him, am experiencing a restlessness regarding the 'last album'and the çovers album' - where are they and just what is the latest progress report? I realise that there is no rush and that patience is indeed a virtue - but someone must have an optimistic update by now...how much longer are we to wait? In the meantime, I will follow the trail laid by Woodybaby and check out her musical suggestions (thanks). In the meantime, as winter approaches and the logfires rage against the wind and rain, let's hear some new JM tunes to see us through to the spring.
Got the Live at Leeds Deluxe thing for Xmas - great sound, though still confused about the tracklisting and packaging: Disc 1 is described as 'The original album' which it patently isn't, it's the whole gig before Kossoff joined in, with the exception of I'd Rather Be The Devil which has mystifyingly been bumped onto Disc 2, when it used to be the last track on the original album - if it had been left as the last track on Disc 1, that would at least have given a complete form to that Disc, with Disc 2 being the Kossoff tracks and rehearsal recordings. Any clues as to why it was done like this John? Also what became of the 3 London tracks that were used for the original Live At Leeds, how come they weren't included?
Hi Duncan If memory serves me correctly Devil was moved onto the second CD to balance up the running times (but I'd have to check this) and also because at the mixing and mastering stage in the studio it flowed better, of course as you know it is the correct version from the Leeds concert. It was intended to remaster the original Leeds for download release, rather than add them to the 'correct' concert recording, and I think I mentioned this in my notes. However a commercial decision was subsequently taken not to do this, which is a great shame I think. The Deluxe Edition is the historically correct concert but is not intended to replace the orignal release which still stands on its own and quite rightly so, but the two release compliment each other. Hope this provides an insight! Best wishes John
Thanks for clarifying that John, sounds like there was a glitch in the package design then. A download would have been something, don't think that made it to the printed notes, although there is mention of both versions being remastered and complementing each other - the mastering on the available 'original' Live At Leeds CD releases is not great, which is a shame, as I suspect the reason JM chose tracks from the other gig(s) was because he thought they were stronger performances - that's how they seem to me, anyway. Cheers, and Happy New Year, Duncan

all the best
Walter
I only got into John Martyn recently and was so sad to hear about his loss.
ReplyDeleteI listen to his music all the time. I've also found other artists that take influence from John which I enjoy.
My favorite's are:
Tom Moriarty
Pete Roe
King Charles
Tom Moriarty has an amazing voice and I find his writing is as thoughtful and inspiring as John's.
Much love and thoughts go out to all of John's fans.
