Annual Gathering?
A good idea? How would we celebrate John's life? What would you like to see at an annual gathering event?
Ive extended the invitation to many and now Ill extend a warm hand to you all. Ill be playing tracks from each of Johns albums on vinyl from London Conversation to Bless the Weather to the Church with one Bell to And to Inside Out etc. Its happening in one of Johns favourite watering holes, Ryans pub,Kilkenny,Ireland on January 29th. Ever wanted an excuse to make the trip? nows your chance. Ill get you a pint.
Just watched the band 'Session A9' doing a wonderful cover of 'One For the Road'. It was broadcast on the BBC's 'A Scottish Songbook' programme this week. Catch it on the BBC website - the fiddle parts are stunning! Would love to see them do this at a John Martyn gathering here in Glasgow. (Still missing you big time John.... xxxxxx)
Dear All, Just a note to say it's nice to read that I'm not alone in missing the Big Man, particularly at this time in what is always a driech month. However, I'm surprised that there's no mention of a little interview with the great Danny T on BBC Radio 2's Radcliffe and Maconie show. What was ostensibly a celebration of Danny's work with Nick Drake ended with Danny's heartfelt comments re John. It was simply beautiful to hear, and articulated just how much Danny and we all miss JM. Not sure if you can still get to listen on iPlayer but worth a listen!
At an 'annual gathering', I myself would try and make some of those at least (*unless you want some here in Oz also!?). Clearly Thomastown, and Glasgow and poss' Hastings?? could be obvious sites from time to time if using diff' venues, or maybe just Thomastown (where he rests?) as a permanent venue. I'd like to see 'related artists' perform, friends/colleagues/family prepared to share insights anecdotes. His old band members playing his music would be a great great treat, generally plenty of JM music played in some way along with his 'favourite JM tipples' lined up to try?!? (his old pub -Carrols?- could make a killing here)...JM merchandise available, and any newly discovered material premiered maybe. I won't mention green tobacco being sold at discount prices though or anything like that. Good Indian curry should be available, he would have liked that maybe? You might also consider possibilty of 'attaching' a 'JM Guitar clinic' either a part day option, or as a separate event the following or previous day to the main convention itself (maybe enough interest for that-look at the guitar chat section for example). It shouldn't be 'maudlin' of course,...JM would have hated that...he hated the 'sentiment' generated around Nick Drake didn't he, following Nicks death. The difference is of course, we who would be attending knew JMs value *before* he died. Many thanks for considering an annual event/convention where people could celebrate the life and legacy of John Martyn.
I'd love to do something on 29th but there's no way I can make Kilkenny. Now I know it's late, but could we not use this form to arrange some regional or local events/get togethers.
We could of course meet in a pub or somewhere similar but I doubt at this short notice we could get JM played all night.
I'm in North East Surrey near the Richmond/London border and could be tempted to do something at my place.. tho I can guarantee good sounds it would of course be rather restricted.. and not sure how I would go about it either.... anyway, if you fancy a JM night contact me jmno1fan@hotmail.com... and we'll see what happens.. I will try and get back to you asap.
Of course if anyone has any better suggestions.. it would be nice to hear.
Just a quick line to mention I hope this idea doesnt fizzle out. There's just under a year now (assuming a convention around the date of his passing), and I hope this turns out to be a 'goer' in some way. -all the best Ian
like the idea of an annual gathering, and kilkenny would be the place. but would not september be a better bet than january? a birthday celebration would seem more like the thing and the rain less relentless. hopefully. peace and love, pete
would like to hear him sing dusty... a video online would be lovely? that was the song that made so many folk I knew at that time to fall in love with his music.
Hiya, I'm not one for posting stuff generally but the guy needs to be remembered for the impact on the lives of those who felt his music. I'm Bristol based, anyone else local feel the same? We could find a place, play some tunes, maybe some clips, share our memories and raise a dram. His music is timeless because it deals with the eternal dimensions of our lives. Cheers John.
Just to agree with the idea of local gatherings... I've just visited the site today and I'll hopefully make it to the Annual for next year. I live in London and just amongst my own friends and acquaintances I know the idea would go down well. I was lucky enough to hear John play in Bristol a few years back and it'd be a great thing if we could have a drink to him and keep his music going.
